Why Recycle?
Recycling conserves natural resources.
Instead of mining, harvesting or drilling for raw materials, we can reclaim
metal, oil, glass and fiber from our trash. It takes less energy and
creates less pollution to reclaim these materials.
Recycling saves
landfill space. By recycling you reduce the bulk and weight of
your trash. Landfills fill up slower when communities recycle, thus
extending the life of old landfills.
Recycling saves you
and your government's money. When communities recycle they
delay the cost of new landfills. Cities and individuals pay by the ton
to have trash disposed of. Recycling greatly reduces the weight of
garbage and lowers trash fees. |

Tips for Recycling
Wash and Squash. Rinsing
recyclables will eliminate smell and insect problems. Stacking or
crushing packaging helps reduce volume and increase density. Only
remove labels if convenient. Thoroughly cleaning recyclables is also
not necessary.
Sort as you throw.
If your program requires sorting, do it as you throw. Have three paper
bags together to accept plastic, glass or metal. Have boxes waiting
for newspaper and magazines. On recycle day this allows you to simply
grab and go.
Be flexible.
Programs will vary from community to community. It depends on what the
brokers will buy, how the haulers will collect and the amount of funds
governments will invest. |
Ins and Outs of Recycling |

|
|
Recycling is a way to recover natural materials
from our trash. In a perfect world, someone would come to your home
and buy your recyclables from you. In our world manufactures still
find it easier to use virgin materials instead of post-consumer plastic,
paper or glass. You can increase the
value of your recyclables by demanding that the new products you buy contain
post-consumer material. Look for the recycling triangle on packaging.
It needs to be more than just recyclable; it needs to have been made from
recycled products. |
