2011 Summer Nature Camps & Clubs

Join the Louisa County
Conservation Board for a great time this summer at six different nature
camps for kids entering grades pre-school through 8th grade. There
is a limit of ten campers at each camp.
All camps, unless
otherwise specified, will be held at Langwood Education Center & Camp.
There will be hikes, stories, games, crafts, nature exploration, snacks
and lots of outdoor fun every day. Fees include a t-shirt and a
group photo.

Cricket Camp June 8-10, 9:00 – 11:30 a.m. 3-4 years old
Cost: $30
Chinkapin Bluffs Recreation Area
This camp is sure to get the attention of your pre-schooler with lots of hands-on fun exploring nature.

Polliwog Camp - FULL! June 20-24, 8:30 - 11:30 a.m. Entering grades
K-1 Cost: $35
Polliwog campers will explore the life of bugs, fish, frogs, birds and furry critters that live at Langwood
Education Center.

Nature
Detectives Camp June 27 - July 1, 8:30 - noon Entering
grades 2-3
Cost: $40
Campers will learn about tracks and other animal signs through a variety of games and activities.

Junior
Naturalist Camp August 1-3, 8:30-noon and August 4, 8:30-2:30 Entering grades
4-6 Cost: $45
Campers can expect to learn about stewardship, use a GPS unit, go
fishing, canoeing, hiking and complete a service learning project.
Participants will receive a state Junior Naturalist patch and
certificate.

Fishing Camp June 13-17, 8:30-noon Entering grades 3-5
Cost:
$40
This camp, cosponsored by Louisa County Extension, will
turn campers into expert anglers by the end of the week. They will
learn to attach their own bait and tackle, fix tangled line and clean
fish. Campers can expect to go fishing every day of camp. 15
participants total. |

River Raiders July 27, 8:30-noon (training) and
August 10-12 (trip) Entering grades
7-8
cost: $75
This three-day trip explores the scenic Upper Iowa River from Kendallville to Decorah.
Campers will canoe, camp and cook outdoors as well as learn other wilderness skills.
The two-night, three-day trek will be spent mostly in canoes and kayaks, winding around bends,
through rapids and past scenic waterfalls, cold springs and 200-foot chimney bluffs.
The training day will focus on paddling strokes, waterproofing gear, tent set-up and trip planning
details. The trip includes the use of tents, food, canoes, lifejackets, paddles and other outdoor gear.

Boundary Waters Wilderness Canoe Trek
June 25-July 2
Ages 14-18
Cost: $400 (scholarships available)
Katie Hammond from Louisa County Conservation Board will be leading
another wilderness trip through Iowa Sate 4-H. This trip explores the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in
northeast Minnesota. If you have a bit of canoeing experience and the
strength and spirit to explore, this trip may be for you! You will
paddle across wilderness lakes, portage canoes and packs, fish for fun
and food, read maps and use compasses, live in tents without leaving a
trace, cook meals in wilderness areas, and learn about the ecology of
this magnificent area. Tents, backpacks, canoes, cooking gear, food,
and transportation from the Iowa 4-H Center are all provided.
